Fundraising for Awa27

GirlGuiding New Zealand is a registered charity and must comply with the Charities Act 2005 and the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).

It is essential that all fundraising is used only for the purpose for which it was given. Even if funders do not request a detailed breakdown, we must still be able to account for how funds are spent.

Before beginning any fundraising, please familiarise yourself with the following documents:

Group Fundraising

Some units or local teams may choose to fundraise together to help reduce the cost for youth members attending Jamboree. Group fundraising can be carried out under the GirlGuiding New Zealand name.

From previous Jamborees, we recommend holding a parent meeting (including all parents of eligible youth members) to introduce Jamboree and identify who would like fundraising support.

If several families are interested, consider forming a small Jamboree Fundraising Committee to organise activities and create a fundraising calendar.

Fundraising Outside Unit Time

Fundraising should take place primarily outside of unit meeting time.

Some youth members may not be attending Jamboree, so it’s important to avoid any feelings of exclusion if the unit becomes too focused on fundraising.

Please ensure that youth members who are not attending remain fully engaged in activities they enjoy.

Using the Fundraising Platform

We’re excited to launch our new fundraising platform that makes group fundraising for Awa2027 simple, transparent and easy to manage.

Visit the fundraising platform here!

Here's how it works:

Every GirlGuiding New Zealand unit already has its own fundraising page set up, but we encourage you to make it your own! Unit leaders will receive an email with a login link. When you first log in, we recommend adding:

✅ A photo that represents your unit

✅ A short message from your unit about your Awa2027 fundraising

✅ Your unit’s fundraising target, so supporters know what you’re working toward

Then you’re ready to start receiving donations! Here are the super simple instructions for those who want to donate:

✅Go to our fundraising platform

✅Find your unit using the search bar

✅Click ‘donate’ and enter the amount

That’s it!

All money fundraised as a unit or team must be deposited with GirlGuiding New Zealand via the Jamboree Fundraising Platform by 13 September 2026.

Funds deposited will:

  • Be held against your unit
  • Be split evenly between all Jamboree attendees in the unit, including adult members

How Payments Work

Supporters can donate directly to your unit’s page, or leaders can deposit funds raised offline using a debit card.

Donations from the community

The platform is flexible and can support a wide range of fundraising activities, including:

  • Sharing your unit’s page on the fundraising platform with family and friends
  • Bake sales or sausage sizzles (supporters can donate directly instead of using cash)
  • Walk-a-thons, skip-a-thons, wheel-a-thons or similar sponsored events
  • Donations from local community groups or organisations

Unit Leaders with the login to the fundraising page can also generate a QR code which can be printed and shared for easy on-the-spot donations.

Donating to your own unit

Collecting cash donations? No worries. You can tally up the amount and add the money to your unit’s page using a debit card. In previous years these funds were held in a bank account, but the fundraising platform is replacing this system.

How does unit money get split?

Any money deposited into a unit’s fundraising page will be held and split evenly between all Awa2027 attendees in that unit, including the adult members. These funds will be allocated before you receive your final invoice for the event.

Any money fundraised as a unit or team should be deposited into the platform by 13 September to give us time to allocate it to your account before issuing a final invoice.

At this stage the platform is only set-up with the existing units across the country. If you do fundraise with multiple units or as a team, then you’ll need to make a payment to each unit (this could be an even split or a percentage split of the money raised – we'll leave this up to you).

Funds raised will be divided evenly by all attendees from your unit, including adults after Platform fees of 2.65% +30c per transaction have been deducted.

Fundraising as an Individual

Fundraising as individual doesn’t require use of the platform, and the rules are a bit different, so please read the below carefully:

  •  Because funds raised will benefit an individual youth member and their whānau, it must not be done under the name GirlGuiding New Zealand.
  • Please ensure donors understand that contributions support an individual, not the organisation.

Fundraising for an individual is not covered by GirlGuiding New Zealand’s charitable status. Regardless of how the activity is described, it is not considered charitable if it benefits a specific person or group of individuals. Donors are effectively making a personal gift to the beneficiary.

As a result:

  • Companies and donors cannot receive a tax donation receipt
  • Donors cannot claim tax credits for these contributions
  • Money fundraised individually (without using the GirlGuiding New Zealand name) does not need to be deposited with the organisation. Instead, the individual can look after this in their own bank account and use it when it comes time to pay their invoice.

Local Support

Please note that grant-making trusts cannot be applied for individual fundraising.

However, many service clubs and local organisations may offer support, including:

  • Rotary
  • Lions
  • Freemasons
  • Jaycees
  • RSA
  • Zonta
  • Soroptimists
  • Inner Wheel
  • Local businesses

You may also wish to explore Heads Up for Kids, noting that applications require support from a New Zealand Lions Club. Please ensure all supporters understand they are assisting participants to attend Jamboree, not supporting GirlGuiding New Zealand as an organisation.

Some organisations run community funding schemes or awards focused on local initiatives, such as:

Before applying, please contact your Local Team Co-ordinator (or Regional Hub Co-ordinator) to check whether a joint application may be possible.

If shortlisted, please complete a Fundraising Intentions Form.

Use of GirlGuiding New Zealand Name and Logo

GirlGuiding New Zealand must approve any use of its name or logo on promotional materials (flyers, posters, websites, etc).

For approvals, please contact jamboree@ggnz.org.nz
